Residents are being invited to find out more about plans for a new, state-of-the-art recycling facility in the Charnwood area.

The County Council is visiting villages across the borough to give people the chance to learn about a proposed new-look site on the edge of Mountsorrel.

Reducing the amount of rubbish sent to landfill is a top priority in Leicestershire and by 2017 it is hoped that 58% of the county's waste will be recycled or composted.

To help achieve this, the County Council is proposing to replace the recycling and household waste site in Sileby with an ultra-modern, accessible facility at an industrial estate on Granite Way. More »

The regional plan for the East Midlands is being reviewed and people from Leicester and Leicestershire are invited to attend a local meeting run by Planning Aid.

The local meeting, one of eleven training and consultation events throughout the region will be held at Voluntary Action Leicester on 22nd July, 18:00 - 21:00.

If you have any views on housing, transport or climate change, or any other aspect of planning policy, this will be your opportunity to understand the planning system and have your say on options being put forward to the Regional Assembly.

During autumn 2008, 19 of the 27 community forums completed a consultation exercise under the topic of ‘Influencing the Big Budget’. This exercise involved using the voting handsets to gain people’s view on what they thought was most important and most worthy of investment.

The choices were based on Leicestershire’s Sustainable Community Strategy, the overarching strategy for all public sector organisations in the County.

The consultation was also conducted with the Citizens Panel and Leicestershire Together Forum. In total approximately 850 people have been directly engaged in this exercise. More »

Network Rail has imposed an emergency closure of the level crossing following an inspection by Her Majesty’s Rail Inspectorate. The inspection looked at various factors concerning the safety of the crossing in respect of both pedestrian and bridleway use, which included sighting distances/warning times/crossing times/line speeds of trains/Lafarge siding arrangement and concluded the crossing is unsafe.
Safety is top of the Network Rail agenda and the decision was taken to request closure for at least 6 months whilst alternative options for pedestrian and bridleway users are considered, including the possibility of a footbridge.
Leaving the crossing open is not an option at this stage as we would be putting lives at risk. We are working closely with Leicestershire County Council, The British Horse Society, Lafarge and British Gypsum to find the safest and most practical alternative for future users of the crossing.

The Parish Council welcomes your views on this matter and would like to reassure residents that it, along with the County Council, will be actively seeking the safest solution to re-opening this popular route at the earliest possible opportunity.

More and more people are making use of their Community Forum to try and improve local services and raise issues of local concern.
- Residents in Birstall were unhappy that the swimming pool in Longslade Community College was no longer going to be open to the public outside school hours. Discussion at the local Area Forum meeting resulted in the College working directly with local users to find ways the pool can remain open.
- Following the Government’s shortlisting of ‘Pennbury’ as a potential Eco-town, the ‘Have your Say’ meetings in Kibworth and Tugby were the first opportunity for residents in the surrounding area to find out how the District and County Council were planning to respond to this challenge.
- At the Blaby South Community Forum residents and Parish Councillors from Sapcote, Sharnford, Stoney Stanton and surrounding villages expressed their concerns about the volume and speed of Heavy Goods Vehicles travelling through their villages. In response officers promised to look into a range of measures to reduce the impact of traffic and improve road safety in the short term, while explaining how they were looking to provide longer-term solutions.
